Ultrasound

Private Ultrasound Services in Kerry

The Scotia Clinic provides a full range of private ultrasound services. Our scanning service is consultant-delivered and our scans are carried out on the most up to date GE Voluson machines which are equipped to provide a 3D/4D modality when it is clinically necessary. Our machines are regularly serviced to ensure that a safe service is provided.

Ultrasound is safe, non-invasive and does not use ionising radiation. However, it does generate heat and should be used cautiously in pregnancy.

Who are we?

The Consultants involved in our ultrasound service are Dr. Mary McCaffrey (Consultant Obstetrician/ Gynaecologist) and Dr. Abd. Fares (Consultant Radiologist). Dr. Halim (Consultant Obstetrician with a special interest in Foetal Medicine) also provides a consultancy service at The Scotia Clinic.

While the majority of our scans are for early pregnancy, pregnancy wellbeing, foetal anomaly scans and gynaecological conditions, Dr. Abd Fares (Consultant Radiologist) provides a full range of general ultrasound imaging.

Dr. Abd Fares’ has extensive experience in all aspects of radiology and his area of special interest is musculo skeletal (MSK) ultrasound.

MSK Ultrasound

MSK ultrasound has an important role in assessing many sports injuries and painful joints. While many people believe that MRI scans are superior because they are more expensive and seem more elaborate, ultrasound scan can dynamically assess muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints throughout the body. It can be used to help assess sprains, tears and other soft tissue conditions.

At The Scotia Clinic Dr. Fares works closely with our Consultant Rheumatologist to inject joints under ultrasound guidance. For example, by using ultrasound guidance for a hip injection the accuracy is improved to almost 100%.

Maternity

Maternity and Gynaecological

Our ultrasound scans in pregnancy and gynaecology are performed by Dr. Mary McCaffrey. In early pregnancy the location of the pregnancy, the number of fetuses, the presence of heartbeats and the Estimated Date of Arrival can be assessed. Early pregnancy scanning is often performed by Transvaginal scanning.

Later in pregnancy ultrasound can be used to assess for fetal anomalies and to monitor fetal wellbeing and the growth rates of the baby. 3D / 4D ultrasound is also used in pregnancy to assess specific areas of the baby where 3D can provide more detailed images.
